If there is one thing I’ve learned since becoming a parent, it’s that “winging it”, particularly at bedtime or in the middle of the night, is a recipe for disaster.
5 Sleep Tips For Room Sharing Siblings
- Set the Rules. Before you move your kids into the same room, have a family meeting and set expectations. Let them know how this is all going to go down and what you expect from them and what they can expect from you. Presentation is so important with young kids – be upbeat, but firm. Remember, you’re all on the same team, but you’re the team captain.
- Stagger bedtimes. If your little ones can handle a staggered bedtime without getting overtired, put your youngest down 15-20 minutes earlier than your older child. This gives your oldest a little extra time with you and the fun challenge of quietly sneaking into bed.
- Invest in a good white noise machine. White noise will help buffer middle of the night rolling around, potty breaks, and the exit of your earlier riser.
- Use a toddler clock. The clock lets both kids know when they need to be quiet and when it’s okay to get up. As is always the case with toddler clocks, consistency and follow through are key. If you don’t respect the rules of the clock, neither will your children. Read why I think every child over the age of 2 years old should have a toddler clock.
- Teach the stealth exit. You likely have one child who consistently wakes earlier than the other. Put that child’s bed closest to the door and teach them how to silently exit the room – after the clock indicates it’s okay to get up, of course. Make the silent exit a fun challenge. Tip: Oil the hinges of the bedroom door up if it’s at all squeaky.
Remember that getting sleep for the whole family is a team sport. Talk positively about how much you love sleep and how you love your kids so much that you always want to make sure they get enough sleep too!
